Right - now onto the important bit... this is what I intend to do to raise the cash:

I'm going to swim the English Channel!

.... but I won't be contending with the world's busiest shipping lanes, changing tides and currents and an average 20% success rate!

No! That's for the amateurs!

I will have to contend with the small children always getting in your way, the bizarrely timed synchronised water-aerobic lessons, the blue rinses and the maniac power swimmers of my local gym's swimming pool! Altogether a very different and far more challenging proposition!

So... the details:

How far?.... 21 statue miles, 18.2 nautical miles, 33,707 metres... thats 1,349 lengths!

When?.... I'm not the world's greatest swimmer by any stretch of the imagination, so I'll be taking it nice and leisurely... over the period of one month... that works out at about a mile a day with a few days off thrown in...

I'll be starting on Thursday 17th November, with the aim of having the whole thing wrapped up by the end of  Friday 16th December...
